What I like... Cortney Tidwell - Eyes Are At The Billions

Cortney Tidwell was born in Nashville, TN, where her grandfather had been a successful recording artist and a guest on the Grand Ol’ Opry, her father was a veteran A&R man, her mother had landed several singles on the country charts in the 1970s.

Her mother was diagnosed with manic depression and Cortney's music ambition was derailed. Cortney's musical genes emerged again after the death of her mother many years later. Wikipedia

What I like... Sinead O'Connor - Reason With Me

Talk about lyrics! This song is amazing. These are the lyrics that caught me:

"Hello, You don't know me
but I stole your laptop
and took your TV"
---
"Oh so long I've been a junkie... I really want to mend my ways.
I'm gonna call that number one of these days"
---
"I'm gonna reach a hand out to you, say you would you pull me up, now could you?
I don't want to waste the life god gave me, and I don't think is too late to save me"

What I like... Santigold - Disparate Youth

There is something I'm really liking here. I was not a big fan of her single "Big Mouth", but this song is on heavy rotation in Sandie's February Radio Station. Enjoy!

Pictures of... Charles Bradley and His Extraordinaires

Born in 1948, Bradley got to see James Brown at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1962, and the experience was transformative. From then on, Bradley performed when and where he could while supporting himself with odd jobs (mainly as a cook) and groping for that main chance.

He got it when Gabriel Roth of the soul-driven Daptone Records - famous for bringing Sharon Jones, another struggling great, to our attention - heard him and guided him down the path that led to last year's "No Time for Dreaming," an album that not only packed a lifetime into 12 songs but also kicked another retro-soul dreamer into a reality he deserved.

Dry The River - Folksy-Gospel-Rock in Modern Era

Front man Peter Liddle decribes Dry The River's music as "folky gospel music played by a post-punk band". Liddle formed Dry The River as a solo project to express music created from influences formed during Medicine and Anthropology studies at University, along with inspiration taken from the likes of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and At The Drive In.

The Norwegian born songwriter ended a 2009 summer tour by enlisting the help of a collection of old friends from previous bands for the tour close in London. This decision proved fruitful as Transgressive soon signed up the nascent group, providing support for a further tour to sharpen their developing sound. Soon they were on the radar of BBC Introducing, who invited Dry The River to play their stage at Glastonbury 2010.

Now based in London's Stratford the quintet have enjoyed a prosperous 2011, awaits their new album on March 2, 2012 called "Shallow Bed"

Members
Peter Liddle: Guitar, Singing
Matthew: Guitar, Singing
Jon: Drums
Scott: Bass, Singing, Glockenspiel
Will: Violin, Mandolin, Viola

Soda Stereo... 80's music in Buenos Aires

Soda Stereo were an Argentine rock band that achieved fame and international success throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. They were a power trio made up of Gustavo Cerati on vocals and guitar, Héctor "Zeta" Bosio on bass, and drummer Charly Alberti. The band is widely considered as the forerunners of the Latin American / Ibero-America / Rock En Español movement that emerged during the mid-1980’s. Soda’s early sound was influenced by new wave bands such as The Police. The band gradually evolved into a heavier sounding alternative rock band, eventually drawing influences from classic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, neo-psychedelia, britpop, and electronic music.
Soda played an important role in the development and diffusion of Latin American / Ibero-America rock. They were the first Latin rock group to achieve mainstream success in South and Central America and helped popularize the Rock En Español scene of the 1980’s.

The band established what would become the template for Spanish-speaking rock music groups and in the process broke numerous ticket and sales records, especially in their native Argentina. They are considered by critics to be one of the best Latin American /Ibero-America rock bands of all time. Soda has sold over 7 million of albums in Latin America and their back catalog continues to sell to this day. In 2002 Soda Stereo was awarded the "Legend Prize" by MTV Latin America, the first prize to be awarded of its kind.

What I like... The Smiths - I know it's over

This is one of my favorite songs by The Smiths. It's one of those songs that every time I listen I have to loop the song for an hour straight. The lyrics from the song soothe me through personal pain.

This song is full of great lyrics:

"Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room"
---
"I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real"
---
"It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind"

Soap&Skin - Eerie and otherworldly synths

New song from her album called: Narrow out Feb. 13, 2012

Favorite songs from her the last album:

Soap&Skin is the experimental musical project of Austrian artist Anja Plaschg (born 5 April 1990). Plaschg grew up in a small village called Gnas in south east Styria, where her parents have a farm. She has played piano since she was six. At the age of 14 she began violin studies and developed an interest in electronic music. She attended the Graz Polytechnic for Graphic Design, but dropped out at 16 and moved to Vienna shortly afterwards.

Her first album, called Lovetune for Vacuum, was released in March 2009. It received excellent reviews and placed in the Austrian Top 10. The album also achieved chart positions in Germany, Belgium and France. Music journalists have already claimed to see in her a new star of Austrian pop. MTV Iggy describes it as music inspired by singer/songwriters like Regina Spektor as well as Electronica mavens like Aphex Twin.

What I like... Mariza - Que deus me perdoe

About Fado Music:

The most widely recognized music of Portugal is fado, and it's been an extremely popular form among the Portuguese for nearly two centuries. Fado is a bluesy music that began to gain popularity among the urban poor of Lisbon in the 19th century. Brazilian and North African influences helped shape fado, as did Portuguese poetry and modinha ballads. The roots of Fado are frequently traced to Brazilian immigrants who brought their fofa and lundu dance music to Portugal in the early 1800s. Similar to Tango, Fado was initially perceived by the bourgeoisie as a disreputable, lower-class music.

The crucial instrument of Fado, the guitarra Portuguesa, is a 12-string guitar derived from a lute common to the Congo region of Africa. This lute was carried by Africans to the Portuguese colony of Brazil during the 15th century during the early years of the slave trade. The instrument, having undergone some significant alterations over time, eventually made its way to Portugal. Africans and Afro-Brazilians had favored their lute as an accompaniment to dance, but in Portugal musicians began to use the modified version of the instrument to accompany ballad singers, and this is the particular milieu in which Fado was born.
